Weight Loss: You Can Because You Can
By Naore Rome

Game Theory seems to find relevance even in an academically remote subject like weight loss, which is far removed from the logical nature of the strategically leaning science. It is true that the theory is practically applicable to the study of Economics, Defense Strategies, Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy and other realms of Science and Ethics. However, it rather came as a surprise when an aspect of the theory was utilized as a remedy for overweight by a professor of Economics at Yale, and surprise it did with the outcome of the application.

In a recent experiment broadcasted on ABC’s primetime live Barry Nalebuff, Economics professor at Yale, confronted five overweight subjects to lose 15 pounds in their own ways, within a given timeframe or else face the shame and humiliation of their “before-experiment” body in tiny swim suits going live on ABC primetime. Barry capitalized on a particular characteristic of Game Theory, ‘immediate consequence is more threatening’ to the tilt. It was a shocker of sorts when four subjects managed to fulfill the condition, even with the lone under par lady managing to shed 12 pounds.

Foreboding of shame did the trick, where everything else on earth from prescription pills to dietary supplements failed to perform. With the impending threat of going primetime live on a channel with sky high ratings, in a shape they would hate to see themselves, they went in for the kill. But what propelled them to turn the impossible into a possibility? All these ballgames are played out in the precinct of the mind. It is not the dramatis personae of external and alien entities playing a catalyzing role in their weight loss game it is all about faith moving mountains.

We tend to forego the long-term implications of obesity, as the immediate and momentary niceties and concerns of life get an overwhelming top priority. There are no impending threats looming large round the corner that would require us to take a serious contemplation on weight loss. Immediate care and considerations for our health is a far cry, when the danger of obesity and overweight seems far off. There are no pressing threats that need an instant dose of remedy, so why care? Every obese person knows that obesity is neither a comfortable condition nor an enviable position to be in. But with the threats due to overweight a long way off and the other needs of the hour aplenty, where is the time for weight loss?

Only when the short-term as well as the long-term perils and hazards of obesity and overweight are infused in the minds of the obese and the overweight, would they start self introspection leading them to take up corrective and curative measures to stay fit. Well, one needs to remember that only the tough gets going when the going gets tough, so you better get going when the going is easy. Ask yourself the reasons to lose weight you will surely get to know the ways to lose weight as time is still on your side. The ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of weight loss will make a sea of difference, only if you are determined.

The Yale professor has used Game Theory to capitalize on the element of fear in the subjects to draw out their inherent determination, creativity and capability to give a counterblow to obesity and overweight. What about combating obesity and overweight with no fear factor butting in? Without any premonition of ignominy and infamy acting as impetus for weight loss, you definitely can do it. Pool your innate resources together and trust your ability, remember, “You can because you can”.

Diabetes and Your Eyes
By Bob Fleming

Diabetes can play havoc with your eyes, and sometimes there are no early
sumptoms. So you may have no idea anything is wrong until your eyesight is in
danger.

Here are the main eye problems that can be caused, or made worse, by diabetes.

Cataracts

These are often described as a clouding of the lens of the eye. They are treatable by
surgery in most cases.

Glaucoma

Our eyes are largely made up of fluid, and when the pressure of that fluid builds up
too much inside the eye, you have glaucoma. Left untreated, it can damage the optic
nerves, and even lead to blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy

Lining the back of our eyes is light-sensitive tissue known as the retina. The retina
contains very small blood vessels that can be damaged by diabetic retinopathy.
Sometimes there are symptoms such as blurred vision, but often you won t even
know anything is wrong until the condition is well advanced. In the worse case, it
leads to blindness.

Early detection is the key to battling all of these conditions, and the best diagnostic
tool available is the dilated eye examination. This is a test in which special eye
drops temporarily enlarge your pupils, allowing the doctor to see the back of your
eyes. This test (which is painless) can detect cataracts, glaucoma or diabetic
retinopathy in their early, treatable stages.

Eyesight is precious, so if you have diabetes do yourself a favor and make an
appointment for your dilated eye examination. And then do it again every year from
now on.

Protecting Yourself from Gym Scams
By Brad Howard

With our fast-paced lifestyles and our less-than-ideal dietary habits, it s no wonder that health clubs and gyms are appearing everywhere. These centers are very important for many people, because it forces them to have the discipline to workout on a regular basis. But do remember that gyms exist to make money. And where money is involved, trust that there will be some people who will go to great lengths to take it away from you! Disgruntled gym and health club clients have plenty of stories to tell. Learn from them and save yourself from shady gym operators.

Gym Scams 101

Ridiculously Low Rates - It s becoming increasingly crowded out there. With so many gyms fighting each other over customers, membership fees are plummeting. However, you should remember that operating a gym is a very expensive endeavor. In order to provide customers with the best experience, the gym or health club must have plenty of operating capital. Low-end gyms, while having much cheaper rates, mean bad exercise equipment, crowded areas, less sanitary facilities and less customer focus. When choosing a gym or health club, it may be best to go to the more expensive places.

Beware of False Advertising - There are many gyms that advertise low-rates, zero-membership fees, or some other way that you can save when joining. However, most of these gyms get the money out of the customer, one way or the other. Be sure to read the contract for any hidden charges that they may impose. Others advertise huge discounts, only to cripple or limit much or their services until the member pays in full. Others, on the other hand, flat-out lie about their services and member benefits. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and inspect the service agreement fully.

Dubious Accreditations - There are so many certificate-giving bodies out there from state and community organizations that few are worth more than the paper it s written on. Be sure to double-check on what accreditations the gym claims to have and see if they come from a truly prestigious or note-worthy organization. The same goes for the so-called certified-instructors many gyms have. Be wary and be sure to research these claims.

Poor Equipment and Facilities - This is what you pay for the most, the ability to use large, specialized equipment. Always inspect the entire gym and its facilities before you commit to signing up. The place should also be spacious - it should not be crowded. Many gyms sign up more customers than they can actually handle. The result is that many customers have to wait in line to use the gym equipment they want. This also means that their equipment is constantly being used and prone to more damage.

Sleazy Contracts - Always read what s printed on the service contract. Three year memberships, high deposit fees, extra charges - these can be all hidden inside the contract and its existence conveniently not mentioned by the sales team. Always turn on the alarm when you encounter provisions requiring you to shell out more money or penalize you for cutting your membership short.
