An Introductory Guide to the Health Savings Account
By Barry Waxler

The United States is unique in that we may be the richest country on the planet, but have a system that fails to provide health care to many of our citizens. The Health Savings Account is one of many efforts to solve this problem.

Ah, the great healthcare debate. The medical profession has seen some absolutely stunning advances over the years. The advances have wiped out certain diseases that used to be catastrophic and a come up with solutions that mean formerly terminal health problems no longer are.

Unfortunately, these advancements have led to a catch-22 situation. The research and care costs money, so much so that many people cannot afford the cost of health care. Of the 300 million plus people in the country, some 240 million have some form of health care. Many of these forms are lacking and it still leaves us with 60 million or so people who have no coverage. That is pretty discouraging given the economic state of the country.

Both federal and state governments have had a go at the healthcare coverage issue. There has been no universal solution that has worked. Instead, the problem is now approached with a variety of programs in an effort to take chunks out of the problem. The Health Savings Account represents one such effort.

The Health Savings Account is an interesting approach to the problem. In simple terms, it works as follows. You contribute cash to a health savings account. At the same time, you buy a high deductible health insurance policy. The account can then be used to pay most of your health costs. If you run into something significant that is going to be expensive such as surgery or an extended hospital stay, the high deductible insurance policy kicks in.

There are a couple of advantages to the Health Savings Account. First, you cut the cost of insurance as the premiums for the high deductible policy will be significantly lower than a regular health insurance policy. Second, the money you contribute to the Health Savings Account is tax free. It also rolls over to the next calendar year without any tax consequences.

So, what can you contribute to your account? The numbers seem to change each year. For 2007, an individual can contribute up to $2,850. For families, the number is $5,650. The numbers change constantly, so make sure to speak with your financial advisor if you are interested in the program.

Is the Health Savings Account the answer to the healthcare coverage problems in the country? Unfortunately, no. It does, however, act as a small part of the solution and every little step helps.

Back Fitness for Senior Golfers
By Susan Hill

Back injuries are prevalent among golfers of all ages and especially for senior golfers. Age has a way of letting us know subtly that our bodies no longer react like the good old days of 20 something. The back is one area of our body we can’t afford to take for granted. Whether you suffer from minor aches and pains, mild discomfort or even general tightness, your back could be at risk as well as your game.

So how can we protect our backs from the wear and tear of age while creating longevity in golf?

The first thing to check is your posture. If you don t know the right way to sit, stand or lift weight, then you are far from learning the complexities of swing mechanics!

The “perfect swing” is something many attempt to learn by watching or reading a book. Yet, it s a motor skill, which also draws upon your feel for things.

When you first learned to swing a golf club, you might think you were learning things from scratch . But were you?

You already knew how to stand. If you tend to slouch while standing, or if your back muscles were poorly developed, you probably ended up trying to create the “perfect swing” by sight rather than by the feel of things.

Maybe your upper back is making up for your lack of lower back flexibility. Perhaps your lumbar pain results from underdeveloped hips or abs. It doesn t matter where your weak link lies. It always kicks in a series of “compensatory” moves.

These wrong moves are not only an open invitation to injury- they can take you years to correct and refine - if you are blind to the underlying postural flaw.

Experts agree that an erect posture with neural spinal alignment can give you an added rotation of up to 30?. Imagine the extra momentum that would lend to your club head!

Three simple ways to Improve your Swing with Better Posture:

1.Stand Tall!
When you slouch, you compromise the normal curvature of the back, which is important for proper joint movement.

Try this simple experiment:
Sit on a chair in the bent-over posture. Your shoulders are slouched and the neck protrudes outwards. Try to swing your arms. Most of the movement will come from your elbows, rather than your shoulder joint (which has a bigger range of motion).

Next, sit up straight, with your shoulders squared and your neck in proper alignment with the spine. Your arms will swing freely from the shoulder and rotate freely in any direction.

More importantly, the right posture will keep your back healthy and minimize the sheer forces on the spine - which form the root cause of pain.

2.Bend at the Hips (not at the Back!)

When you bend, make sure your back is in a neutral position. That can only happen if you bend from your hips.

To facilitate this position, make sure your lower abs are properly engaged. Strong abs are the very foundation of a powerful, fluid stroke!

3.Improve Stability

Better balance and coordination help to effectively transfer the momentum of your swing to the ball.

Stabilize your torso by keeping your feet shoulder width apart- having them too close or too far apart will affect your balance.

Learn to shift your weight smoothly from one foot to the other. It will greatly reduce the impact on your lower back.

Finally, do not lean on the toes or roll at the heels. A shaky foundation can kill momentum before your club head strikes the ball.

It may take some time to get accustomed to the new posture. But these simple changes will help you play better golf longer.

Doesn t that make it worthwhile?

Once you get more experienced in ab exercise, you might want to move on beyond the basic exercises to do some more advanced ones. While these exercises are often complicated, they are much more effective for focusing on specific muscles. Be warned, though, that you shouldn’t try them until you know what you’re doing, as you might hurt yourself or others around you.

The first two to try both use an exercise ball. In the first exercise, you lie on your side, and then put the ball between your legs. Then tighten your abs and use your hip muscles to gently lift the ball.

A second exercise to do with the ball is the plank, which is when you do what are basically push-ups, only with your legs balanced on the ball and your arms stretched a long way off the ground.

If you have two people, a good advanced exercise is for one of you to lie on your back and put their legs in the air. Then, the other holds the legs around the ankles, and tries to bend them back towards the head. The idea is for the person lying down to try and force their legs up again against the downward pressure.

If you’ve got a metal bar or something else that you can hang from, you can do hanging ab exercises. Simply hold on to the bar, and then try to raise your legs up as close as you can get them to your chest.

However, whichever exercises you do, you still need to exercise all your ab muscles equally. It’s no good trying to ’spot reduce’ to get rid of fat on one particular kind of your body - the only way to do it is to get fit all over. So you’d better get started!

Be Healthy - Drink Wine!
By Kathy Howe

Is wine good for you? The answer is, “Yes!” There’s lots of research providing proof that there really are health benefits from drinking wine.

Flavonoids from the skins and seeks of red grapes are the key to wine being good for you. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels. At the same time these flavonoids actually increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels and decrease the likelihood of blood clotting.

Scientists believe that there may be other health benefits from red wine. A recent study discovered that an antioxidant in the skins of red grapes, called resveratrol, may inhibit the growth of tumors in some cancers. It’s possible that resveratrol can help treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well and new studies are on the way.

Are some wines better for you than others? Again, the answer is, “Yes!” Researchers at University of California at Davis have concluded that full-bodied dry red wines contain the highest levels of flavonoids and provide the greatest benefits. The number one wine for supplying the most flavonoids is Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir also ranking highly. Sweeter wines and white wines have less flavonoids and are less beneficial.

How much should you drink? Moderation is the key. Women should drink 4 ounces of red wine daily with a meal and men 4-8 ounces.

Pour yourself a glass of red wine and drink to your health. Cheers!

Kathy Howe and her husband, Steve, spend much of their free time tasting and enjoying wine. Their interest in wine is reflected in their Web Site, http://www.cheers2wine.com - a Comprehensive Guide to the California Wine Country.

Beginner Guide to Exercise
By Varun Pratap

In this article, we’ll discuss different methods of Exercise. You can basically divide exercises routine into 2 categories i.e. Aerobic and Anaerobic.

Now lets understand them in simple words. You should remember that any exercise done at moderate to High power and lasting less than several minutes are called Anaerobic Exercises (Sprinting)

And exercises those are done at low power and lasting several minutes are called Aerobic Exercise (Cardio i.e. Biking, running).

They both have their effects on body. Like Aerobic exercises will burns calories from body fat &amp waste muscles (but that is not good, it slows down metabolism). Whereas anaerobic exercise help you to develop high level of cardio fitness without wasting muscles( that’s how you lose weight fast with these exercises).

ANAEROBIC EXERCISE

As I explained above Aerobic Exercise asks you to put up effort up to high power and they last less than several minutes. Now if you can structure a good Anaerobic Routine you can have better cardiovascular system and have really toned up body, that too without any muscles wasting.

Exercises like 100 m sprints, Weight Lifting, Interval Training are all examples of Anaerobic Exercise. This kind of training allows you to exert lots of force over small intervals (Interval Training). So when you are doing 100 m sprints, you are also pushing your cardio limits and decreasing body fat.

AEROBIC EXERCISE

Again this kind of training requires you to put low effort throughout long intervals of time. This is great way to build very good cardiovascular system but in spending long efforts of exercise you start loosing muscles, which also help you to loose fat. So this should not be your main Exercise Routine.

Exercise like Biking, Marathon running is all examples of Aerobic Exercises. As they require you to put long hours of effort.

If your goal is to lose fat then you should put Aerobic Exercise as one of routines done at least 2-3 times in a week..

STRUCTURING THE ROUTINES

How your routine should look like?

Now while structuring your routines you should be looking to put both categories (Anaerobic and Aerobic). In normal 5 day workout week, you should have 3 days of Intense Anaerobic exercise and 2 days of mild aerobic exercise. Your routine should look something like this.

Stretching.

Workout(Anaerobic/Aerobic exercises)

Cool down with stretching.

Stretching helps to prevent injuries, so it should be done before/after starting any routine.

Your routine should consist of both categories.

EXERCISES FOR BACK RELIEF

Many people believe that rest is best for a painful back, but actually, what your back really needs when it&amp#8217s hurt is exercise. Regular exercise relieves back pain by strengthening and stretching the muscles that support the spine and helps to prevent future injury. This is a use it or lose it situation: the more you rest, the weaker your back gets, even if it is hurt. Studies have actually shown that you can heal your back pain faster and get back to your regular activities with just two days of rest. This article will focus on Yoga Exercises. Remember to contact your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

YOGA EXERCISES FOR YOUR BACK

A good, regular yoga practice will go far in relieving the stress and tension that sometimes cause mild back pain, and in fact, studies have shown that yoga is the number one most effective exercise for relieving back pain. However, not all yoga poses relieve back pain, and some can in fact aggravate existing pain, so it is important to know which poses will be most helpful in relieving back pain. It is best to do these exercises under the supervision of a certified yoga instructor, and if you encounter any problems with these poses, you should consult an expert. Even just one or two sessions with a yoga instructor can help, as an instructor will help you with your form and posture during poses. Here are some of the best yoga poses for relieving back pain. Each pose should be held from five to ten seconds, depending upon your level of comfort, and should be done on a mat or other soft, supportive surface.

CORPSE: Lie flat on your back in a relaxed position, arms resting at your sides, palms down, and legs lying naturally, with knees turned out slightly. If it hurts your back to have your knees turned outward, do this pose with knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Breathe in and out for a few seconds while allowing any tension to leave the body.

CAT STRETCH: Start out on your hands and knees with a flat back. Your hands should be directly under your shoulders with fingers spread. Knees should be directly under the hips. Head is held loosely so that you are looking at the floor between your hands. Inhale, and as you exhale, arch your back toward the ceiling, tuck your chin in to your chest so that you are looking at your navel, and tuck your tailbone underneath. Hold, then release back into your original position.

WIND-RELEASING POSE: Lie flat on your back as in Corpse pose. As you inhale, bend your knee, place your hands right below the knee, and draw your leg towards your chest. Your left leg should remain flat on the floor. Exhale and bring your forehead up to touch your knee. Inhale, and then as you exhale, return to your original position. Repeat with the other leg.

SAGE TWIST: Warning for this pose&amp#8212it involves twisting your back, so you should take particular care not to twist too far or you risk aggravating any existing back pain. This should be a gentle stretch twist just as far as is comfortable. Sit on the floor with both legs out in front of you. Bend your right knee, lift your right leg over your left, and place your right foot on the floor next to your left knee. Sitting with spine straight, place your left elbow on the right side of your right knee. Bend your left arm so that your left fingertips are touching your right hip, while at the same time, twisting to look over your right shoulder. This is where you need to be careful not to twist too far. Hold for a few seconds, release, and repeat on the opposite side.

PALM TREE: Stand with feet facing forward, arms at your sides, weight distributed evenly on both feet. Raise both arms over your head, interlock your fingers, and turn your hands so that your palms are facing upward. Next, place your palms on your head and turn your head so that you are looking slightly upward. Stretch your arms upwards, and at the same time, come up onto your toes if you can do so without pain. Stretch your entire body upward and hold, if you can. Some people have difficulty balancing during this pose, so just do the stretching part if you need to.

FISH POSE: Lie on your back with knees bent and arms at your side. Arch your back as far as you comfortably can and raise it off the ground by pushing the floor with your elbows. If you can, tilt your head backwards and rest the crown of your head on the floor. Breathe deeply from the diaphragm and hold pose for one minute if you can.

LOCUST: Lie face down with arms at the side, palms down, and elbows slightly bent with fingers pointing towards the feet. Raise your legs and thighs as high off the ground as possible without causing your back any pain. Hold for one second and repeat up to twelve times. This can be a vigorous exercise so you must take care to strain already injured muscles.

BENDING FORWARD POSTURE: Stand up straight with feet together and arms hanging loosely along your sides. Breathe in deeply and raise your arms straight above your head. While breathing out, bend forward and touch your toes if you can. If you can&amp#8217t reach your toes, grab hold of your ankles or calves. To complete the pose, you should touch your head to your knees, but this may be too difficult for many who suffer from lower back pain. Your movements during this pose should be smooth, not jerky.

African-American Hair - Tips To Obtain Semi-Relaxed, Healthy Curls
By Dana Lawrence

While it can be difficult to manage, African-American hair is extremely versatile in terms of being able to achieve a wide variety of hairstyles. For many women, the ideal style is a semi-relaxed, loose curl that still has plenty of body and moisture and is not dried out or dulled by harsh hair products.

Here are some tips for keeping African-American hair soft, loose, manageable and healthy-looking:

1. The bottom line for soft, healthy black hair is moisture. Start by moisturizing your hair from the inside. Drink lots of water!

2. Select the right shampoo, using one that s moisture rich and detangles while cleansing without stripping the hair of all its natural oils. Also - don t over-shampoo which can strip hair of moisture. Wash your hair no more often than every week to week and a half. And shampoo only once, never twice.

3. Be sure that shampoo is completely rinsed out before conditioning, and be patient - leave conditioner in for several minutes to help moisturize your hair. Hop out of the shower and cover your hair with a towel or shower cap while you organize your jewelry or makeup tray or take off old nail polish, just so you are not tempted to shorten the moisturizing time.

4. Try hemp-based moisturizers on your hair, such as Malibu s Hemp Moisturizer for Dry Skin, as a moisturizer for hair also.

5. After rinsing out the conditioner, towel dry and add natural plant oils back into your hair, such as grapeseed oil, almond oil or a very light application of virgin olive oil. Use your palms to spread one of these shine-enhancing oils evenly through your hair and then comb or brush your hair to assure the ends are also moisturized.

6. Apply a gentle straightening product such as Curlaway? Relaxing Gel, which is natural and semi-permanent. As Curlaway relaxes curl is also moisturizes with plant oils, Vitamin B-5 (panthenol) and MSM. Unlike alkaline, quick-acting relaxers, Curlaway Gel can be used on chemically straightened, permed or colored hair, which permits highlights or even a shade change.

7. All heating appliances can dry and damage hair. It s better to use a mid-range setting and best to let hair dry naturally pulled tightly on rollers. Ironing your hair while it is damp or slightly damp can cause severe breakage and damage.

8. For sleek, romantic waves, set your hair with large rollers or use narrow rollers for sexy, bouncing ringlets.

9. For the tousled, casual look, use a medium barrel curling wand and let the curls fall where they may.

10. After using rollers under a dryer bonnet or air-drying naturally, running your fingers through your hair a few times after you are done straightening will help smooth out your hair, and achieve a natural look.

11. To keep great volume, use a flatiron only on the top layers and the front to achieve a frizz-free, smooth look, while the curlier hair underneath pumps up the volume.

12. Find a style that works with your natural hair type and growth pattern, and don t over-relax your hair until it is bone straight, strawlike and life-less without body or curl. Show off your curls! Try to work with your hair and not against it.

13. Eat a balanced, HEALTHY diet rich in fruits, vegetables and protein and your hair will grow faster and healthier, as well.

The bottom line is, to have healthy-looking, semi-relaxed hair use gentle relaxers and shampoos, lots of moisturizing, and avoid too much heat.

Curlaway Relaxing Gel can be purchased at Walgreens if not on the shelf, ask them to order it for you and directly from Xenna Corporation online at http://www.curlaway.com or 800-368-6003

Malibu Hemp Moisturizer is available in the hair care section at Wal-Mart.

Avoid NHS Waiting Lists With Private Health Insurance
By Simon Christopher

The NHS has recently announced that their waiting lists for operations and other treatments are at an all time low. This sounds like good news, until you take a serious look at the numbers. The NHS waiting list length for March 2007 is 774,000 - 2,000 people less than February 2007. Are you prepared to stand in a queue with thousands of other patients if you or one of your children needs medical treatment?

Millions of UK residents have already stepped away from the NHS for certain elements of their health care needs. Private health insurers offer a wide variety of plans and options that promise fast treatment and perks like private rooms and in-home care, plus benefits that include reductions on fitness club memberships and assistance with stopping smoking.

One of the major reasons that people opt for private health insurance is the desire to get treatment when and where it s best for the patient rather than waiting until there is an opening through the NHS. Keep in mind that private health insurance should be seen as a complement to the NHS rather than a substitute for it. There are exclusions to some conditions that private health insurance will cover. In general, private health insurance will not cover:

Existing conditions
Existing conditions are defined differently by different insurance providers. Some will not cover any illness or condition for which you have ever been treated, or which arises from a condition for which you have been treated, has been diagnosed or for which you have taken medication. Others will consider a medical condition new if you have not been treated for it within a stated time frame, e.g., within the past five years.

Chronic, long term or incurable conditions
In general, private health insurance excludes cover for chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, hypertension and other illnesses that require ongoing, long term care. Most also exclude “catastrophic” illnesses like cancer, AIDS and heart disease. There are specialty private health policies that do include treatment for specific conditions, though, so shop around to find one that suits your needs.

Elective and/or cosmetic surgeries like breast implants and facial reconstruction
Among the surgeries that are commonly excluded are breast enlargement and other cosmetic surgeries, sex change operations and organ transplants.

Experimental treatments and drugs
In most cases, private health insurance will not cover treatments or drugs that are still considered experimental. Many companies include most organ transplants under this umbrella.

Private health insurance offers many benefits that can supplement NHS services. They include:

Access to medical services that may not be available on the NHS

Private hospital facilities

In home care for some conditions

Rapid treatment for covered conditions

While private health insurance has the reputation of being expensive, the truth is that there are policies that are affordable for almost anyone. One of the best ways to reduce the costs of private health insurance is to shop for your policy and insurer as carefully as you would a new car. Sadly, the FSA states that most people do not investigate their options for insurance, including those for private medical insurance. If you investigate private health insurance online, you ll find a wide variety of health insurance plans available beyond the typical expensive comprehensive plans.

Like any type of insurance, if you re unsure it s important to take professional advice. The last thing you want is to discover that you bought the wrong policy when you ve just been diagnosed with an illness or condition and you are expecting immediate private treatment.

You can find a comprehensive list of UK health insurance companies in one specialist directory at http://www.uk-insurance-index.co.uk You ll also find an archive of customer policy reviews sharing their positive and negative experiences to help you buy the right health cover for you.

Affordable Health Insurance in Georgia Demanded
By Kirsten Portrie

Affordable health insurance in Georgia seems to be the topic of most residents living in the peach filled state… Do you chat with your neighbors on a daily basis regarding the many issues based around health insurance? Do I have the right deductible? Can I afford to buy health insurance? What company do I look at? Georgia residents have had enough of recent insurance price increases and are trying to come up with a plan to reduce all insurance costs across the board. The health insurance rates have gone up considerably over the past ten years. It seems the average rate increase on a health plan in Georgia runs around 15% per year. Insurance carriers like Aetna, Blue Cross of Georgia, &amp United Healthcare say that It s now time to make some changes in the industry To find the best insurance rates be sure to use an insurance broker or consultant like [www.GeorgiaHealthInsuranceWeb.com]. They are one of the best companies in helping solve the problem with free insurance consultations.

Affordable Insurance Can Be Found?
Having trouble finding affordable health insurance? It is not one size fits all. Now, with the increases in policy rates, hardly anyone in Georgia can afford to stay healthy. Depending on your current state of health, budget and individual needs, the best insurance for you may be far different than the best insurance for a friend or another family member. What can you do protect your family? Contact an expert insurance consultant and talk to them about your needs. They can show all available policies, not just one policy from one carrier.

One thing you can do to find the best policy now for your health or home is to have a basic understanding of the various types of insurance that are available in Georgia, and what each does and does not cover. That can be helpful in determining which plan will work best for you. Before you buy insurance for any purpose, a talk with a Georgia health insurance consultant can save literally thousands of dollars per year.

Picking Policies?

What policy do I choose?, how much deductible is right, is my prescription drugs covered these are the things that are on most people s minds when they look for health insurance. In Florida there are many insurance agents, selling their special type of health insurance policy. These policies vary from agent to agent, even in the same city, so the best bet is to search all available insurance companies through a insurance portal : www.GeorgiaHealthInsuranceWeb.com

Traditional health insurance is called fee for service or 80/20 coverage. This is most likely the type of insurance that you grew up with. With that type of health insurance, you are entitled to visit any doctor you choose, and the insurance company pays 80 percent of the bill.

Health Savings Accounts?
Many other options exist for covering medical expenses. A Health Savings Account allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars each month. Catastrophic insurance carries a low premium with a high deductible, and is designed to cover you if you develop a serious illness or injury. However, for the average consumer, the choice is generally between fee for service and managed care. All types of plans carry their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is important to understand what these are in order to make the right decisions for your family. Find out more about your available choices for health insurance from www.GeorgiaHealthInsuranceWeb.com.
